Another excerpt from the research entitled, Dating among Teenagers: Its Effects on the Society and the Church.
According to Paul Valery, “Adolescence is no longer a phase. It is an age in its own right.” There are different characteristics that aroused from the contemporary teenagers which may alter their view on dating relationships. First is that their thoughts and minds are now open for different, new, and unlimited perspectives. Second is that they are having a difficulty in dealing with insecurities. The third is that they show different reactions towards basic human realities. And the fourth one is that they are now becoming more socialized.
The major influence of dating among adolescents is the media. The teens are more exposed to media materials include television, movies, and magazines. It is said that these materials showcase a more matured display compared to some generations ago. Media centers even produce sensitive materials. Actors and actresses even start to go/do a more unveiling stuff just like Filipino child stars Camille Prats and Angelica Panganiban.
Other agents that influence dating among teenagers are peers, and believe it or not, the parents themselves. We all know that peers pressure is already a classic one. Meaning peer pressure has always been the reason behind teenage dating ever since the olden times. Some teenagers think, especially ones who belong to a group, that if their friends already start dating, they themselves must start dating, too. If not, they will be considered an outcast or “others”. It would be very difficult for them to feel this way so they choose to date even though they are not ready yet. Peer groups also introduce to them new dating partners. It’s like when you don’t have somebody to date, just go with a friend. “Both you and your friend are connections to dating partners for each other.”
Parents are also agents that influence teenage dating. You may be asking, “Huh, parents?” Well, it is evidently true especially among American communities. In schools, the parents are the ones who organize school dances and activities that would require children to attend by groups or by partners. Some youths view these occasions with nervousness, shyness, and even discomfort. However, there are some parents, especially mothers who described teenage dating as ‘cute’. So, I wonder how Adam and Eve would feel if ever their sons will start dating…
“There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand; the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden.”
This is a very inspiring verse from Proverbs 30: 18-19. there are things that we really can’t understand: why eagles fly in the sky, how snakes hide behind stones, how huge ships sail on deep seas, and how a man cares for a woman.
